The Norwegian parliament is going to study the possibilities of allowing dual citizenship for foreigners living in Norway, according to the newspaper VG. Among the Nordic countries Norway is the only country that does not allow dual citizenship. Last year Denmark also allowed dual citizenship. A number of countries now allow dual citizenship.
- It's about time that Norway follows the example of other countries. Globalisation means that many Norwegians live abroad and establish families but if they are to get the local citizenship, they have to give up their Norwegian citizenship, says Sveinung Rotevatn from the Left party.
Also foreigners living in Norway have to give up the citizenship of their country if they wish to become Norwegian citizens.
Along with the Socialist Left Party, the Left party put forward the suggestion for dual citizenship to the Norwegian parliament.
